Phoenix Airport Museum

Art at Phoenix Sky Harbor

If you’ve set foot in the Sky Harbor Airport in the last 35 years, you’ve likely seen artwork from the Phoenix Airport Museum. The museum offers a unique experience to travelers, as they can enjoy artist-designed floors, ceilings, murals, and sculptures inside and outside the airport.

The program’s origins can be traced back to 1962 when the iconic Phoenix mural by Paul Coze was unveiled in Terminal 2. Since then, subsequent terminals were designed with art in mind, culminating in the quirky 1988 exhibition titled Dental Impressions. This began the airport’s art program and paved the way for establishing the museum.

And did we mention the museum is free and accessible to all airport visitors? That’s right—regardless of whether they have a plane ticket, visitors can see many of these impressive exhibits. Most art and exhibitions are located pre-security and can be viewed 24/7.

Traveling with pets

Dog on leash at Sky Harbor AirportThe TSA also recently offered some helpful tips for traveling with pets this summer. During the hottest months of the year, planning for traveling with pets through Sky Harbor is crucial to ensure your pet is as comfortable and safe as possible.

The full article can be found here. In the meantime, here is a summary of some of the tips the TSA shares for pet travel:

  • When arriving at the security checkpoint, your pets should be in a hand-held travel carrier.
  • Remove your pet from the carrier just before the screening process begins.
  • Place the empty carrier for X-ray screening, but never place the pet in the X-ray tunnel.
  • If possible, carry the pet during the screening process or have it walk on a leash.
  • A TSA officer will swab the owner’s hands for explosive trace detection.
  • After the screening, return the pet to the carrier at the designated re-composure area away from the security checkpoint.
  • Check with your airline for specific pet travel restrictions before your trip.

New Corridor at Sky Harbor Airport

PHX Cultural Corridor

Another exciting development out of Phoenix Sky Harbor is the recent awarding of a $10 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant for the Cultural Corridor.

The City of Phoenix Aviation Department has been selected as the recipient of this grant, which aims to reconnect disadvantaged and underserved communities neighboring the airport with Downtown Phoenix.

The grant presents a significant opportunity for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to play a role in the city’s development. It also showcases its commitment to cultural enrichment and community empowerment.

More flights

American Airlines Extra Flights at Sky HarborOne of the most exciting developments is the addition of more flights and more destinations out of Sky Harbor Airport. For example, beginning in November, American Airlines is set to expand its operations at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport significantly. With the addition of over 25 daily departures, the airline’s winter schedule will be its largest in nearly a decade.

Notably, American Airlines will introduce new nonstop service from Phoenix to Jacksonville, FL, marking its fourth direct destination to the Sunshine State. After a gap of more than three years, they are also resuming nonstop flights to Wichita, KS.

There’s also good news for those traveling to and from many Canadian destinations. Lynx Air has revealed its latest expansion plans from Phoenix, introducing nonstop service to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) starting on October 12.

The new route will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. This follows the launch of nonstop service to Calgary (YYC) in February. Air Canada also operates a flight connecting Phoenix and Toronto, providing additional travel options between the two cities.
