Limousine History: A Brief Look

The limousine has come a long way since its early days as a horse-drawn carriage. Today, we’ll take a closer look at the history of the limousine to help you learn more about these incredible vehicles!

Limousine History 101: Where Does the Word Limousine Come From?

First, let’s start with the word limousine itself. Limoges is a province in France, and many believe the word limousine comes from this area. Others believe the word limousine comes from the French word “limousin,” which means cloak or hood. This makes sense since early limousines had a driver’s compartment covered by a cloth roof.

Limousine History: Beginnings

The limousine’s inception was in the early 1900s, however, chauffeured transportation was around for a few hundred years before that.

In the early 1900s, limousines were horse-drawn carriages used to transport wealthy people around cities. These early limousines were often ornate and featured luxurious amenities like silk cushions and curtains.

In 1916, “Limousine” was officially defined by the Society of Automobile Engineers as: “a closed car seating three to five people, with driver’s seat outside.” This was the first time the limousine was defined as a separate entity from other types of vehicles.

As time went on, however, the limousine began to evolve.

In 1928, we saw the introduction of the first stretch limousine. This new type of limousine was much longer than the traditional limousine and could comfortably seat up to 12 passengers. Stretch limousines quickly became popular among the wealthy and famous and are still widely used today.

As technology progressed, so did the limousine.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, we saw the introduction of the first luxury limousines. These new limos came with air conditioning, televisions, bars, and swimming pools! Luxury limousines quickly rose in popularity.

It’s also worth noting that through limousine history, these vehicles were often synonymous with wealth. Today, limousines are available to anyone who wants to travel in style.
